I know, I know, coconut oil is supposed to be bad for us and many of you all who are really careful with your diets are probably cringing right now, saying, “you’re crazy!, how am I supposed to lose weight if I eat this artery clogging saturated fat?”……but, before you hit the “back” arrow or throw things at the computer screen, please take a minute to learn how beneficial coconut oil can really be as a part of your diet plan.

“….This had better be good”

For many years now coconut oil has been mistakenly considered to be unhealthy and, consequently, this false perception has led many people, particularly in Western cultures, to miss out on one of nature’s most tasty and healthy super foods. I was one of those skeptical people who didn’t realize the truth about coconut oil and I would even go to the point of checking labels on certain foods to make sure there were no “tropical oils” among the ingredients.  So, what made me change my mind?  How did a once obsessive label-reading, calorie-counting nutrition nut suddenly change his mind and start using coconut oil in most of the household cooking?

Traveling the Tropics

As part of some of my missionary journeys around Latin America, I would stay with native families and closely observe as they cooked their daily meals.  In the About Us page of this website I go into slightly more detail about this, but, in a nutshell (pun intended?) I noticed how healthy and energetic many of the people were and how coconut was a constant in their diets along with other natural foods that grew in these regions.  This led me to study and learn more about the roles of  raw coconut and  virgin coconut oil and the health benefits they offer.

I decided to switch

A while back after finally convincing myself that coconut oil would not raise my cholesterol, clog my arteries and cause me to drop dead, I decided to place an order for extra virgin coconut oil.  This is different than the hydrogenated coconut oil that gave it a bad reputation; the coconut oil that we enjoy is raw, organic, and unrefined.  We love to use it in place of butter, often spreading it on toast, waffles, and using it as our primary cooking oil.  My wife loves to rub it on her skin as a moisturizer, and, since it does not contain water, it has a much longer lasting effect than most commercial skin care products.

Coconut Oil is very Versatile

Coconut oil has many possible uses that go beyond just use in recipes and cooking.  The pages over on the right side of the page contain more in depth information on just some of the benefits this awesome oil has to offer.  From improving cholesterol to use as a skin care moisturizer, coconut oil and coconut products have been around forever, but slowly, more people are learning what populations in the tropics have always known- coconut, particularly raw coconut, is one of the most healthy sources of food known to man.
